Porlock is a beautiful village on the northern edge of Exmoor, with thatched houses, an interesting church, pubs, restaurants and shops, and two museums. To the south and west and north-east are high wooded hills including the famous Porlock Hill, dreaded by early motorists, and beyond them open land.Paths are easy to follow through the woods or down to the sea. Red deer are frequently to be seen, sometimes even in the edges of the village, and in October you can witness the rut without even leaving your car. To the northwest is the small harbour of Porlock Weir,which has its own amenities, and the sea.

A little further afield is Minehead, the start of the South-West Coast Path,which runs just to the north of Porlock, and just past that, Dunster, with its castle and gardens, cobbled streets and medieval buildings, or you can take the open-topped bus to Lynmouth and Lynton with their amenities. Minehead is also the terminus of the West Somerset Railway, with frequent steam trains throughout the year.
